News - Street Pastors

Dear Church leaders

We are writing to enlist your help to publicise some key activities in the coming weeks which will help explain to local Christians the significant opportunities they have to share God’s love in the Bridgwater and Taunton areas.

Hinkley Point community fund has generously invested into a programme of recruitment and training of new street pastors in recognition of the contribution made by the currently small number of Christian volunteers who offer unconditional care and support to patrons of the town’s pubs and clubs on Saturday nights.  More than that, it has been humbling to hear the police express their appreciation of the service given by Street Pastors and their hope that we can soon return to having patrols out in Bridgwater every weekend instead of just two or three a month at present.

Just looking

In order to reach out to anyone in a local church who might be interested in finding out more, we have arranged a free buffet supper and short presentation at 7.30pm at Bridgwater Baptist Church, St. Mary Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3EQ, on Wednesday 21 August and will be sending a quantity of invitation cards to each church in the hope that these will be passed on to anyone who would like to attend on a ‘no commitment at this stage’ basis.

Celebrating

As part of our efforts to raise the profile of the Street Pastors’ ministry we have invited the Founder of the movement, the Revd Canon Les Isaac OBE, to be the keynote speaker at the 10th anniversary celebration of the launch of the Bridgwater Street Pastor team. This will include the commissioning of new recruits from local towns and endorsements of the work by representatives from the police and local councils. Please extend a warm invitation to members of your congregation to join with us at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 4 September at Bridgwater Baptist Church, St Mary Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3LY.

Training

Those who wish to commence training to become street pastors will be encouraged to attend the programme commencing at Bridgwater Baptist Church on Wednesday 11 September and which will continue up to and including Wednesday 4 December. There will be no charge for any church member from Taunton or Bridgwater who wishes to attend the course. The outline programme showing the topics covered each week is attached. It may be that some of your church members would like to sit in on one or more of the sessions but do not wish to train as a Street Pastor. This is fine and we will make them very welcome.

Ambassadors

We have experienced members of our team who love to visit Churches to share encouraging stories of how lives have been touched dramatically by local Street Pastors in recent years. If you can include one of our ambassadors in a church service or midweek meeting we will be pleased to speak briefly or at length as you request. If you can find a slot show the new video film of local street pastors in action at the same time as you relay this information to your congregation we will be most grateful. We can deliver a copy of the film to you on a usb stick or you can download it or show it direct via the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHvXrY3mzRo

Thank you for passing on this information to your church members
